The Netherlands was the first non-native English speaking country to provide international students with courses taught in English. Higher education in Holland is known for its high quality, which is ensured by a national regulatory and quality assurance system. The Dutch higher education system is consists primarily of three different types of institution.  These are Research Universities, Universities of Applied Science and Institutes for International Education.

Study in the Netherlands is similar in terms of duration to other common international study destinations: Bachelor's degree (BA, BSc, BEng): 3-4 Years Masters degree (MA, MSc, MEng): 1-2 Years PhD: 4 Years.

Since most courses and degrees are running for more than a year, the majority of international students may need an entry visa in Dutch called a Provisional Residence Permit or Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf (MVV). The MVV will require you to enter the country for duration of six months and once you have to apply for a Residence Permit in the country–this should be done on your behalf by your chosen university. A temporary residence permit (MVV) will only be issued if your request fulfills certain conditions: you must have a valid passport and also you should have enough financial means to pay all the necessary fees.

Before you can study at the degree level in Holland as with other destinations, you will need a certain English proficiency. A score of no less than 6.0 IELTS or TOEFL 550 (Paper Based), 213 (Computer Based) will be expected. Depending on your preference in choosing the institution the fees may vary from €8,000 and €16,000 for a bachelor’s programme and between €10,000 and €22,000 for a master’s programme for a non EU Student. And the expected living expense for a student is approximately 800 to 1000 Euros per month. Financing your studies is something that has to be thought thoroughly. It is permitted to work while studying for a fixed number of hours, depending on your nationality. Your employer will have to apply on your behalf for a work permit and you should not presume that as part of your budgeting there will be a job available. These are few of the points to be considered always.
