Lithuania is at a crossroad between west and east Europe, and throughout its complicated history has developed a unique culture, which encompasses both deep respect for traditions and robust wish to learn and innovate. Lithuanians are among the most educated people in the European Union. The native language is Lithuanian, one of two living Baltic languages.  Lithuanians are one of the ethnic groups in the Baltic region. While Lithuania has a population of about 2 944 459 people, there are at least another million living in other countries, with Lithuanians generally located in the USA, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Russia, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Costs of living here are lower than in western countries, which makes Lithuania great for tourism, education or business. Lithuanian people are simple, calm and can be somewhat shy with foreigners, but friendly and good-intended when you get to know them.

“Knowledge is priceless; however, studies have to be paid for”

At Higher Education institutions in Lithuania, tuition fees differ from institution to institution, depending on the chosen programme and the cycle. Educational institutions announce their tuition fees annually. On average, the cost of programmes at Higher Education institutions is approximately between 1300€ – 5500€ per year. At universities, the highest tuition fees, coming in at 8500€ per year, are for the training of aircraft pilots. The lowest fees are for Humanities and Social Science studies at 1300€ per year. Tuition fees for the second and third stages are different. Higher Education institutions in Lithuania focus on giving students the skills they need in order to apply their knowledge in a practical way. Therefore, students are able to undertake educational, professional or scientific practices both locally and internationally. A foreign national seeking access to studies in Lithuania has to be proficient in the language of instruction. If the study program of your choice is taught in Lithuanian language, you will have to pass a Lithuanian proficiency test. If the studies are in English or another language, you will either need a certificate proving your language level (higher education institutions have their own requirements on the score needed), or pass the language proficiency test provided by the higher education institution.

The citizens of recognized 74 countries do not require a visa to enter Lithuania. Citizens of other countries need to apply for a Schengen visa or National visa at Diplomatic Missions or Lithuanian Consulates. You can also have a temporary residence permit there too. There will be a charge for the issue of visa.

The academic year starts in September and ends in mid-June and is divided into two semesters – spring and autumn. Students can opt to study full-time or part-time. Each study programme is evaluated according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), with each year of study being awarded 60 ECTS credits.
